Physiotherapy is where an operation turns into a working limb. A knee replacement, a repaired tendon or a fixed fracture reaches its final result through what happens in the weeks afterwards, and that is this department's job - starting early, because a joint that is allowed to stiffen is far harder to free than one that never did.
The second stream is neurological rehabilitation: relearning movement, balance and daily tasks after a stroke, a head injury or a spinal problem. Progress there is measured in small, specific things - standing unaided, feeding yourself, walking to the gate - and the programme is rebuilt around them each week.
The third is ordinary long-standing pain: backs, necks, shoulders and knees. Sessions in the unit are only half of it; each one ends with a home programme, because what happens on the other six days is what actually changes the outcome.
