(01)About the practice

What Dr Athyan G does

This consultant covers the theatre and emergency lists - the operations that were not on a list yesterday. An emergency anaesthetic is the harder version of the same job: the same assessment of heart, lungs and airway, done in minutes, on a patient who may not be able to answer questions.

Regional anaesthesia is the main interest. Spinals, epidurals and nerve blocks let a great deal of surgery happen without a general anaesthetic at all, which for an elderly patient or someone with a chest problem is often the safer and much more comfortable route, and the recovery is quicker.

As with the other anaesthetic clinic, there is no walk-in OPD and no consultation fee. Assessment is arranged through the surgical team once an operation is planned, and through the front desk at any hour when it is an emergency.

Special interests

  • Ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia
  • Emergency and trauma anaesthesia
  • Anaesthesia for the elderly
  • Critical care
(02)Education

Qualifications, in plain words

  1. MBBSBachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - the basic medical degree, five and a half years including a year of internship.
  2. MD (Anaesthesiology)Doctor of Medicine - three years of postgraduate training in anaesthesiology.

Council registration, society memberships and published work are listed once the consultant supplies them. We publish the degrees the hospital holds on record and nothing beyond that.

Rapid sequence intubation
Securing the airway quickly in a patient who is not fasted or is deteriorating.
Procedural sedation
Comfortable, monitored sedation for endoscopy, dressings and scans.

Ventilation, fluid and drug management for patients admitted to the ICU.
