What Dr Venkata Ratnam Chesamalla does
Ear, nose and throat problems get dismissed as minor for years before anyone looks properly. A blocked nose that never clears, a child who says 'what?' too often, a voice that has been hoarse since last winter - each of those has a cause that can be found, and most of them can be found in the consulting room with an endoscope.
The bulk of the clinic is sinus disease, ear discharge and hearing loss, allergy, tonsils and snoring. Examination is done with a rigid endoscope and an otoscope at the first visit rather than at a second one, and hearing is tested on site where it needs measuring rather than guessing.
Surgery, when it comes to it, is mostly endoscopic - sinus surgery, ear drum repair, adenoid and tonsil removal - and much of it is day care. Anything that turns out to be head-and-neck cancer is staged and referred on with the imaging already done.

- A tiny vent in the ear drum for glue ear - often the reason a child stopped responding.
- Microlaryngoscopy
- Examining and treating the vocal cords for a voice that has stayed hoarse.
- Hearing assessment
- Audiometry and tympanometry, so hearing loss is measured rather than estimated.
