What this clinicis actually for.
Neurosurgery is the surgical side of brain, spine and nerve problems - and it works closely with neurology, which sees many of the same patients without an operation. Most people who come are not heading for surgery at all: a slipped disc or a trapped nerve is usually settled with time, physiotherapy and injections, and an operation is offered only when the pain is relentless or a nerve is genuinely at risk. The exceptions are the emergencies - a serious head injury or bleeding in the brain - where hours decide the outcome.
Done in-house, usually the same day: Head injury · Spine · Disc
- Head injuryAssessment and surgery after a serious blow to the head.
- Slipped (herniated) discBack or neck pain shooting down a limb, when it needs more than rest.
- Spine surgeryRelief for nerves compressed in the neck or lower back.
- Brain & spinal tumoursDiagnosis, imaging and surgery where a growth needs removing.
- Pinched nervesPersistent numbness, weakness or shooting pain from a trapped nerve.
- SciaticaLeg pain from a nerve in the lower back, assessed for its cause.
- Brain haemorrhage careUrgent management of bleeding in or around the brain.
- HydrocephalusTreatment for a build-up of fluid pressure in the brain.
- Spinal injuryStabilising and treating the spine after a fall or accident.
When to wait, and when not to.
Come in straight away if
Don't book an appointment for these. Come to emergency, or call +91 9100005195.
- A head injury followed by vomiting, worsening drowsiness, confusion or a fit - come in now
- The worst headache of your life, coming on in seconds
- Weakness, numbness or clumsiness spreading in an arm or leg
- Back pain with loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness between the legs - an emergency
- Sudden difficulty speaking, seeing or walking
Lowering the risk
What actually makes a difference, not folklore.
- Wear a helmet every time on a two-wheeler - it is the difference in most head injuries
- Lift with the legs and avoid twisting under load to protect the spine
- Keep the core and back muscles strong; they support the discs
- Control blood pressure - it is a major cause of bleeding in the brain
- Make the home safe from falls for elderly relatives
Looking after yourself
Alongside treatment - never instead of it.
- Most disc pain settles with staying gently active - long bed rest makes it worse
- Do the prescribed back or neck exercises daily once cleared to
- After any head injury, have someone stay with you for 24 hours and watch for warning signs
- Take nerve-pain medicines regularly as prescribed, not just when it flares
- Return promptly if numbness or weakness is spreading rather than easing
