When to wait, and when not to.

Come in straight away if

Don't book an appointment for these. Come to emergency, or call +91 9100005195.

  • A limb that looks bent, or a bone you can see - keep it still and come in
  • Numbness, pins and needles, or a limb going pale or cold after an injury
  • Back pain with loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness between the legs - this is an emergency
  • A hot, swollen, intensely painful joint with fever
  • Being unable to put any weight on a leg after a fall, especially in an older person

Lowering the risk

What actually makes a difference, not folklore.

  • Keep weight in check - every extra kilo is several extra kilos through the knees
  • Build leg and core strength; strong muscles protect the joints they surround
  • Lift with the legs, close to the body, and never with a twist
  • Make the house fall-proof for elders: lighting, dry floors, bathroom grab bars
  • Calcium, protein and some daily sunlight - bone loss is silent until it breaks

Looking after yourself

Alongside treatment - never instead of it.

  • For a fresh sprain: rest, ice, a firm bandage and keep the limb raised
  • Keep a plaster cast completely dry, and never poke anything inside it
  • Do the physiotherapy exercises daily - recovery follows the exercises, not the calendar
  • Keep moving gently with back pain; long bed rest makes most backs worse
  • Use painkillers as advised, with food, and tell us if you need them every single day
